Down: 1) When a group of people talk in a technical language that non-specialist do not understand, they are said to be speaking 'jargon'. Almost every technical field has a vocabulary all of its own. For example a communications engineer might say something like "The 'c' over 'kt' is good enough to allow a 30db link budget with an anisotropic antenna". This makes sense to the communications engineer, but it is just gobbledygook to others. Another favourite habit of people is to speak in acronyms. An automotive salesman might be heard to say "The SUV TIV is SAAR adjusted whilst the C SEG is down YOY". Jargon is excellent for 1. Communicating efficiently with like-minded people. 2. Excluding laymen from specialist conversations2) A generally derogatory term to describe someone who loves technology to excess, in particular knowing the fine detail which seems 'geeky' to other people. For example, knowing the operating frequencies of every Intel micro ever made would be considered 'geeky'. The description is also used to suggest that they have a limited social life because of their obsession with technology However, some people like to call themselves geeks and are proud of it! Very similar in meaning to the word 'nerd'.3) A free email system operated by Microsoft. Millions of people use hotmail because it is easy to set up an account and costs nothing. The downside of Hotmail is that because an account is so easy to set up, some people consider the address as unreliable i.e. if you send an email to a hotmail account then you can't be very certain that someone will actually read it. For example, which one of these would you think is the more likely to be read by someone? iloveteachictforever@hotmail.com or admin@teach-ict.com4) A computer programming term. An 'array' is very common data type in computer programs. An array allows you to handle single column lists, double column list and more. For example a 'one dimesional' array could store a list of names Index Name 0 John 1 Sarah 2 Henry 3 Emma 4 Tom and so on. Notice that most programming languages have the first element of an array at position zero, not 1.6) This is an example of a new type of web site that has arrived on the Internet only recently, namely the 'Social Networking' sites. Piczo and others like it, offer a free, personal page for you to describe your interests, a list of friends that are also on this site, favourite music, recent photographs, what's happening and so on. The idea is for people to share their pages so that they can share news, views and offline events. Other examples social networking sites include Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. Now that social sites are becoming common, others are springing up that try to cater for specialist interests such as a pure business networking site or people that share common environmental interests.7) A very popular MP3 Player produced by Apple. It can store thousands of songs. The interface was very novel, as it is sensitive to finger sliding, the resulting action depending on what is being controlled - for example Volume or Track selection. Across: 5) A very popular search engine. A search engine returns a list of websites (or documents) that meet the search criteria you put into the search box. Search terms not only include keywords but can also include keywords that are *not* present. For example, there is an advanced search form for Google at: http://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search?hl=en6) Perl is a computer 'scripting' language. A 'script' allows you to write a set of commands that will act on the data being fed into it. For example it is excellent language to use for processing text and so it is widely adopted to handle web-forms and converting them to email on a web server8) A control technique. The most common logic type is Binary i.e. a value is either 1 or 0. Or OFF and ON But fuzzy logic allows values to be anywhere in-between as well. So a value may be 0.35 or .99 and so on. Fuzzy Logic works by applying a set of rules to the input to decide what to do next. For example, an oven is being used to cook some food. It uses a temperature sensor to measure the heat but also an image sensor to detect how brown the cake is becoming (it is a very fancy oven!). The colour of the cake can be anywhere from pale (uncooked)to black (burnt). So fuzzy logic rules are applied such as IF Temperature is within cooking range AND cake colour is not brown enough, then keep cooking ELSE switch off oven.
