Down: 1) Is an aspect of the family system, which must simultaneously change and remain the same. A family may operate to its satisfaction and to that of society while the offspring are dependent, but not so when the children need emancipation from the family. Often the family in crisis is in a disruptive transition from one steady state to another. A family may be more open to importing energies, more amenable to intervention efforts. Some families tend to function only so as to reduce or eliminate pain (equilibrium) rather than to change affirmatively (steady state).2) The boundary of a family is behavioral and is evidenced by the intensity and frequency of interaction among its components. Family boundaries change as members come and go. A person may be related by birth or marriage and living in the same household, yet not be within family boundaries and not part of the interactional network. Maintenance of family boundary occurs on both sides of the boundary. Within the family, boundaries are maintained by differentiation and specialization, as reflected in role allocations. Differentiation is commonly determined by age and sex, but these are uniquely refined in each family system. Across: 3) Are characteristic functions of the family. The family is always a subsystem of its society and participates in the socialization processes of that society. A central task of the family is to assure that its members are sufficiently acculturated to participate in the other societal susbsystems that enable attainment of societal goals. The family is expected to control its members in order to prevent them from interfering with attainment of the society’s goals4) is an essential family function. The family has consistently had the capacity to change its structure and function to adapt to marked changes in its environment. The family calls upon the energies of its components and exchanges energies with the significant systems in its environment. Another necessary adaptive mode of the family is its assimilation of external stress as experienced by its members. A family is considered maladaptive when it cannot adapt to the changing demands placed upon it by its environment and its members.5) Family territory has both a spatial and behavioral dimension. Society requests and requires families to be territorially based, to be oriented in space.6) Is increasingly emphasized as both the keystone of family interaction and the key to understanding family dynamics. Every family’s behavior is influenced by the style and effectiveness of its communication. Communication practices are crucial to any understanding of family because of the importance and intensity of exchanges of feeling. Communication in the family is extremely complex and subtle because of the number of functions served by the family. One energy exchange can convey a number of meanings, not all of them congruent. A child is expected to understand and comply with all these messages.7) The effectiveness of family organization is the extent to which goals are fulfilled – the goals of its members and the goals of society. If societal goals are not fulfilled, the family may be dissolved by legal decree. The family may persist as an interacting system. Society, the family, and its members may all share familial goals of economic independence, intimacy, and affection and yet be in conflict about the priorities to be assigned to each of these goals. In order to achieve goals, the family must, through its organization, secure and conserve energy from both internal and external sources. The members must contribute energy for the family system as well as import energy for their individual purposes.
