Much of what we know about the Yuan dynasty comes from him. He was greatly respected.14) An instrument which uses Earth's magnetic field to show direction revolutionized travel. It made trading and traveling long distances easier and safer. It was invented during the Tang dynasty.18) To provide service as a government official. The Song dynasty used this along with bureaucracy to create a better government. To be a part of this you had to take very difficult written exams. It insured that anyone with abilities, including commoners, could be a part of government. It provided much stability to the Song dynasty.19) In 1206 this powerful Mongol leader united the many Mongol tribes. His name was Temüjin, but after he became kahn (leader), he changed it to mean "Universal Ruler." In 1211 he led his powerful armies into China. By his death in 1227, most of Northern China belonged to the Mongols.
