Their economy is largely based on agriculture, like the traditional cash crops of tobacco, rice, and sugarcane. And the big one, COTTON. With the boom of textile mills and the invention of the cotton gin, cotton cloth became extremely affordable, and as a result extremely in demand, and the world began to rely on the American South to supply the raw cotton. Wealth in the south was measured in terms of land, and in terms of slaves. Slaves were treated as a form of property to be bought and sold like cattle. Conditions for slaves varied from plantation to plantation ranging from relatively humane to absolutely barbaric. Some slave revolts and uprisings as a result of the harsh circumstances. Fear of revolts lead to increasingly restrictive slave codes, and as cotton crops become more important to the southern economy and the aristocratic culture of the south becomes more entrenched, southerners become more and more defensive about slavery.

Started off as largely unsettled with ties to the South due to reliance on the Mississippi river for shipping, bust as military action drove out the Native American tribes and the building of canals, railroads, and other infrastructure began to tie the territory to the East Coast we see the region become more connected to the North. The main economic staple of the region is the large grain crops like corn and wheat. There is no slavery in the region, so agriculture in this region only begins to grow as technology makes it easier for individual families to plant and harvest more acreage. The steel plow and mechanical reapers make it increasingly profitable as does the increasing connection to the East Coast markets via train and canal.
29) Political Leadership- James Madison did not have the experience for war. He is not a good rallying figure like George Washington. Economically- trying to keep the budget of the US small. There is no centralized way to handle the money. Have to take out loans to cover 2/3 of the cost of war. Militarily- There is only 6,700 men in the army. They are poorly equipped and leaders are way past their time. The only hope is through the navy. Men are well trained. They have 16 ships that are sea worthy.

36) The Americans outnumber the Texans by 3 to 1. Additionally Mexico has a law that all immigrants must convert to Catholicism. Mexico then closes their border to Americans. Americans ignore the border close. General Antonio Lopez Santana becomes dictator of Mexico. They declare Texas as a republic in March. Sam Houston catches the Mexicans by surprise at a battle & they capture Santana himself. Under the threat of death, Santana is forced to sign a treaty to make Texas independent. When the word gets back to Mexico that Santana signed this document they do not agree that it is valid because it was signed under duress.
37) British warship Leopard, fired on the US warship Chesapeake & kills 3 wounded 18 and impressed 8 men.
38) British would seize US cargo ships and in addition to taking their cargo, they would take a few men and force them into the British military.
