32) The Normandy invasion. Hitler knew something was brewing but he didn't know when or where. Known as D-Day or Operation Overlord. Goes as planned - an amphibious invasion. Not just us, also British and Canadians. Assault is split up into 5 beaches (Juno, Sword, Gold, Omaha, Utah) Invasion was almost a complete disaster, allied air power missed their mark due to visibility conditions. Germans land at full strength. People who made it to the beach were killed by machine gun fire. Radios waterlogged. Manages to open up a way into France.
34) There is a constant fight with who has the best plan for their party. This is the atmosphere the Nazis come to power. Hitler distinguished himself as the leader of the Nazi group. Hitler immediately begins consolidating the government's power. Immediately launches an armament campaign to build up Germany military to relief the Great Depression. Issue because the treaty of Versailles says that Germany cannot have a large army & Hitler is beginning to build it up again.
35) Accept the scientific advances and adjust their lives accordingly. Sought to adapt to new scientific findings. Bible no longer taken as literal.
36) Put millions of Americans back to work. Dig ditched for the WPA. Clearing trails for the CCC. Working people were grateful after years without a regular paycheck. It did not end the great depression. Alleviated stress but the depressed condition of the country continued.
37) Japanese aircraft appear in the sky above Pearl Harbor. 8 US battle ships are sunk. None of the ships that are sunk actually end up going all the way down under the water. Some ships can be repaired and reused. Japan also launches attacks on US in Philippines & Guam

40) Meet to discuss of post-war world. What should we do after Germany is defeated. Poland is a big point of disagreement between USSR and US and Great Britain. Stalin wants a defensive buffer zone. US wants independent Poland. Want to make sure Stalin doesn't break agreement.
41) American diplomat stationed in Moscow, Russia. Drafts this telegram back home that shapes our foreign policy for the next 50 years. Lays out the situation that the soviets are doing. Says we should fight back by - educating the public on Soviet threat. Promote democracy abroad. Turn our eyes inward and solve our own social problems so that the Soviets cannot exploit them. Sets the framework for the containment policy.
42) US based on a capitalist system and USSR is based on communism. They're fundamentally at odds with each other. Communism is based on the idea of spreading. If communism spreads that means the destruction of the US capitalistic society. We've seen these issues becoming a sticking point (Potsdam Declaration). Cooperation in this post war world between the West and East won't happen.
