Down: 1) If any of you have taken PHI 2010 (Intro to Philosophy), you'll notice that course is broad. This course is much more focused. In this class we will focus on ethics and we will refine our critical thinking skills so as to evaluate various ethical theories/issues. 3) Philosophers construct/analyze arguments. Across: 2) Ethics is the branch of Philosophy dealing with good versus bad, right versus wrong. 4) This is not meant to demean or put down anyone's faith. The reason why these are dead-ends is that often times religious arguments are based on faith and people have different faiths. In addition, you can be an ethical person and not be religious and/or an atheist; or, you can be an unethical person and be very religious. 5) You may want to avoid the following two dead-ends when making ethical arguments: ethics, law, God/religion 6) The law should not be the basis for your ethical evaluations. What is legal is not necessarily ethical, and what is ethical is not necessarily legal. For example, it is illegal to speed. But, if your wife is pregnant and is about to give birth, the ethical thing to do is speed and break the law. Alternatively, having sex with your best friend's girlfriend behind his back is totally legal in the United States. Most people, however, would find such behavior unethical. 7) Molina's Definition of Philosophy: Philosophy deals with the obvious. What most people take to be obvious, philosophers question/analyze. Philosophy encourages you to question everything, take nothing for granted.
